What is a church of Christ?
In the New Testament church of Christ is not a name used to distinguish one denomination of Christians from another. In New Testament times "church" did not convey the special religious connotation it does today. This is obvious in the "non-religious" event of Acts 19.
32 Some therefore cried one thing, and some another: for the assembly was confused; and the more part knew not wherefore they were come together. 33 And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander beckoned with the hand, and would have made his defence unto the people. 34 But when they knew that he was a Jew, all with one voice about the space of two hours cried out, Great is Diana of the Ephesians. 35 And when the town clerk had appeased the people, he said, Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not how that the city of the Ephesians is a worshiper of the great goddess Diana, and of the image which fell down from Jupiter? 36 Seeing then that these things cannot be spoken against, ye ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly. 37 For ye have brought hither these men, which are neither robbers of churches, nor yet blasphemers of your goddess. 38 Wherefore if Demetrius, and the craftsmen which are with him, have a matter against any man, the law is open, and there are deputies: let them implead one another. 39 But if ye inquire any thing concerning other matters, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly . 40 For we are in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no cause whereby we may give an account of this concourse. 41 And when he had thus spoken, he dismissed the assembly .
The word assembly (highlighted in the above passage) is the same Greek word that is translated as "church" in Romans 16:16 and throughout the New Testament. The Greek word simply refers to a gathering of people with common interest. As note above the common interest of the first assembly was a disorderly gathering of citizens, that is to say, a mob. The second assembly was referring to an official gathering of citizens somewhat like our city council meetings. The third assembly was a now orderly, but unofficial, gathering of citizens.
In the phrase "church of Christ" the word "of" is added to the word church to
designate "to who" the church,
assembly, or fellowship belonged. Therefore, the phrase "church of Christ" is a
phrase informing us the
assembly of people belong to Christ. To say in another way; A group of
Christians banded together to provide
for and engage in teaching the doctrine "of Christ" [Acts 2:42; Philippians
4:15], worshiping "in the name of
Christ" [Ephesians 5:18-20; 1 Corinthians 11:17-34], and caring for the needy
"in Christ" [Acts 6:1-6; 1 Timothy
5:16] was called a "church of Christ" in the first century. So should it be
today.
ADDITIONAL THOUGHTS:
Leon E. Cathey, evangelist for the church
The church of Christ is not a building but a group of individual
Christians belonging to Christ.
The name "church of Christ" on a building or a sign only informs where some
individual Christians gather from
time to time as the church belonging to Christ.
Each member of Josey Lane simply speaks his or her convictions based
on their personal Bible
study. While I, or any member of the church belonging to Christ, can not
speak as a representative of any
church, group, or other person we are not ashamed to count as fellow-laborers
any one who is
"set for the
defense of the gospel"
(2 Tim. 1:8; Phil. 1:17).

NOTE:
Since there is not a physical organization ("churchhood", "brotherhood" or
denomination) responsibility for the actions of independent and autonomous local
churches of Christ each person has the responsibility to make sure the
congregations listed in the above links have Bible authority for what is
taught and practiced. If you chose to become part of any listed church of
Christ it is your responsibility to make sure their only source for authority
as to what they teach is the Bible.
